Today was another trip to Boston Children’s.
This time for all three of our littlest.
It was just a re-check for Jude, Shepherd and Vivienne… since they all have corrected clubfoot. They are followed by a great orthopedic surgeon at Boston Children’s, and we expected today to be a regular check-up.
But it wasn’t.
Jude was officially released from his night-time boots and bar. He’s been wearing these bad boys (not the exact same boots, forgoodnesssakes, but you know what I mean), every night since his feet were corrected way back in the summer of 2007.
Jude will go to sleep tonight like any other kid… no boots, no bar.
Amazing… considering his feet used to look like this.
P.S. If you’d like to learn more about clubfoot, you can read more here.

Awesome! We just got fitted today for boots&bars. I'm not looking forward to this much at all since Ewen does not sleep well as it is, and when he had his body cast on (for his hip) was up every 1-2 hrs. every night.
Stefanie says
Oh wow.. that's rough, Amy! Our kiddos sleep like rocks now, it just took them a few days to get used to their boots ๐
Donna says
Yay Jude!!!!! Wiggle those beautiful little piggies and sleep well!!!!

Wendy says
WooHooooo! Fabulous news! Good job, mom, getting him such wonderful care.
I hope you ask him what is was like to sleep without them tomorrow morning when he wakes up..bet it will be amazing. Boots and bars are something I've never experienced and it makes me think how much I take for granted every day.
Congrats!

funny you should post this today b/c club foot is one of the special needs we are considering for our next adoption and i just called our agency today to start our pre-approval/paperwork. is there an age where it is too late to begin the casting? we haven't begun the process of talking to a dr yet but that will be my first question. do you know?
Kim says
Stephanie,
Praise the Lord for your precious Jude! He has such a precious smile! How will you celebrate? ๐
clearness says
I dream of a day when my son doesn't have to go to bed wearing an HKAFO clamshell brace that is hinged at the knee. A hing that is SUPPOSED to be locked, but I never lock it. Congrats on losing the script to wear the boots to bed.

Thanks for this post. My little brother had to wear that bar and shoes-he used to slam his feet up and down and tear the sheets to shreds. We are adopting a six year old with club feet, probably early next year, so I'm glad to see that your kids are doing so well.
Aus says
HOORAH – so cool for you guys!
hugs – aus and co.

Go Jude, Go Jude, Go Jude!

Oh this post pulls at me! And we live SO close to the U of I (45 minutes)–not that they don't have the Ponsetti Method other places … but WOW–who knew such great things have come from Iowa?! Now just to have my husband say yes to adoption. (sigh)
He did see the photos of Jude's feet last night on my computer from your posts in 2007 … and he asked curiously what that was on the screen. Maybe God will work on his heart ๐
Congratulations Jude! I still grin thinking of him running as a BOY–no foot issues! What a beautiful picture!
Blessings!
Valerie

Your blog is such an encouragement to me – especially in this stage of our adoption. We hope to have a LID within the next few weeks in China and are doing the little boy SN route. I look at your sweet Jude (a name we are considering also) and wonder if our little boy will have clubfoot just like him. So exciting to think about! I did have a question – when you have traveled to China, what type of carrier did you use? An Ergo? (I thought I saw you in one in some of your "picking up Jude" pictures.) We are hoping to purchase one for our trip, but would love feedback from others who might have used something that worked for them.
Thanks so much and such sweet kiddies!
Jennifer and Matt says
YEAH Jude!!! Gosh, has it really been 3 years already?! Time has flown by – I've been following you for that long! Jude, I hope you had a great night's sleep last night! I'm sure it felt so good to not be restricted in any way. I'm so looking forward to this day with our son. Sleep is not our friend now. Stefanie, you and your boys were one the biggest reasons why – well, y'all and the Lord leading us of course – we chose to be open to clubfeet. And here we are one year home with the most amazing little boy who endured casting and now his shoes and bar alot better than I would! Thanks for being such an inspiration!!
