I live amidst the sweltering heat and humidity of Birmingham and have been seriously taking photographs since college, which was much longer in the past than I care to think about. On weekends, I can typically be found in a pretzel-shape on the ground, trying to find the perfect angle to take the perfect photograph of a perfect flower. (Yes, I always strive for perfection in my work.) My macro photography is joyful and vibrant, bursting with life and passion. Photography is something that I enjoy immensely and I love being able to share it online with so many people. There is so much beauty to be explored in nature, and it’s an honor to represent that wonder in my work.

Illuminate India is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded by myself, Kristi Werre, and Brie Mahar – two adoptive moms with children from India. Seeing the immense need that exists among the impoverished children in India, we were moved to action. Illuminate India was founded in 2011 with the goal of brightening the futures of impoverished children in India. Currently we are partnering with an orphanage in Calcutta to bring physical and speech therapy to 23 special needs orphans, as well as provide basic needs to improve living conditions at their orphanage.
We also just launched a new project to build a children’s home with Angel House for 50 impoverished children in Calcutta who were previously living on the streets. We have raised over 3/4 of the funds needed for this home and have just $9,000 left to raise by this August. The home will be built this fall and will open in December of this year. Check the website for details on how to get involved.

Six months ago Isabella went to China with her mom and dad to welcome her long awaited for baby sister, Tahlia. Tahlia has been such a joy and blessing to her family and she can’t imagine life without her. Isabella, her sister, and cousin have a huge burden and desire to make a difference for Tahlia’s friends that were left behind in her orphanage in Maonan. They wanted to do something to help them! And that’s where Crafts For China’s Orphans was born, from a desire to make a difference in the life of an orphan!
Isabella, Helaina and Michaela are using their creativity to try and raise money for the orphans of China. Half of the money raised will be used to buy needed supplies that will be sent directly to Maonan SWI – their baby sister’s orphanage – and the other half of the money will be directly sent to “Half The Sky Foundation”, the foundation that works in their sister’s orphanage to provide nurture and care for each orphan. Half the Sky really made a difference in their sister’s time at her orphanage! I am so proud of them and their hearts of compassion and love, and in awe of how they practically put that love into action!
My husband and I have been involved in Special Needs Ministry for the past 10 years. This involvement led me to start a year-round camp for children with disabilities four years ago. Over the last 10 years, God has really softened our hearts for children with special needs.
Almost 6 years ago, my husband & I were attending an Experiencing God for Couples workshop at our church. As Henry Blackaby was speaking, all I heard was God whispering the word “adoption” to me. I thought it was strange. But, it kept coming to my mind. At first, I thought maybe God was trying to tell me that I should seek out finding my birth parents, since I am adopted. But, that just wasn’t it. So, I prayed about it some more. This is when God clearly started to put China on my heart. One night I finally worked up the nerve to tell my hubby what I was on my mind.
Initially, he thought I was crazy. We already had 3 children, 2 girls and finally a boy.
So, we both agreed that we would start by sponsoring an orphan living in a special needs foster home in China. This continued for several months. But, I still felt definite nudges from the Lord that we were to do more. So, while on a walk one evening, I brought up adoption again with my husband. And, to my surprise, he said Let’s do it.
To make a long story, somewhat shorter…
We traveled to China in 2008 to bring home our Maylee and the rest, as they say, is history. Our hearts were forever changed the day we walked into her orphanage. We began to pray: Break our heart for what breaks Yours. And, boy oh boy, what a journey!
We traveled back to China 2 years ago, for our precious Sam David. Maylee and Sam David both have spina bifida and have faced many surgeries, lots of therapy and every day challenges associated with spina bifida. But, through it all, they have the most incredibly joyful spirits and are such a blessing to our family!
It is now that we will journey once again to China, this time for a sweet little girl who has down syndrome. We are so thrilled to welcome her into our hearts and home!
I appreciate this opportunity as we are desperately trying to raise the funds to bring our girl home. We were so fortunate to be able to pay for our 2 previous adoptions with the sale of my former business. But, this time, we are working completely on faith and prayer to bring this adoption into reality.
