On Saturday, January 20, we celebrated Sophie’s third birthday. What a blessed day, to have our girl here at home with us.
Last year at this time we had to settle for sending her a birthday cake via Adele at blessed kids and wondering what she might be doing to celebrate her day, if anything. But on this day we could treat our girl to a special day, a day just to celebrate her.
Our local museum was putting on a special show in their planetarium about Chinese astrology. It sounded great so we all loaded up and went – my sister, her kids and my mom met us there.
Thankfully the kids enjoyed each other and giggling in the darkened planetarium because the show was not so great. Afterward we let them loose in the kids’ play area and they all had a great time, making paper girls, putting on fireman’s gear, digging for ‘fossils’, visiting the mini (and I mean MINI) zoo and just generally running wild.
By the time we left the museum the kids were ‘starving!’ so we headed to the China Buffet, one of Sophie’s favorites. Actually she doesn’t so much love all the Chinese food as she does the sweet and sour chicken (minus the sweet and sour sauce), Chinese noodles and ice cream with sprinkles for dessert.
After gorging ourselves we rolled home and everyone went outside to enjoy the beautiful day. My mom and sister refereed some races while I stayed in to wrap Sophie’s presents in the Strawberry Shortcake paper she picked out.
Cake and ice cream soon followed and then it was time to open presents. Sophie’s big gift was an adorable playhouse that I had picked up at the Pottery Barn Outlet just before Christmas. As excited as Sophie was, I think Belle was more. I guess that’s a plus to having to share everything, sometimes your sister gets something reallly good!
She also got a baby bed, some Sponge Bob and Dora DVDs for the car, a Bratz pony, and some princess dress-up shoes.
We think she enjoyed the day as much as we did, but we know there is someone across the world who must have been sad on this day, someone who made the difficult decision to leave their child to an uncertain future, if they even felt like she might have a future at all.
And we, who have been entrusted with this precious child, will do everything in our power to make sure her future is all she wants it to be.
