a name

We need a name for our next bundle of joy.

Choosing a name is something we take very, very seriously. After all, it’s what said child will be called for the rest of her life.

We’ve been at it for months and have a few we like, but nothing we love.

I love Vivienne’s name. Amazingly, I stumbled upon it and fell in love with it before I realized someone insanely famous had just used that name for her daughter. But I loved it enough to overlook that, and I’m so glad I did. I fall in love with Vivienne’s name more and more all the time. Alas, I fall in love with her more and more all the time.

Moving on…

Our last name isn’t long, but it’s hard to pronounce. So we need to stick with a relatively easy to pronounce first name.

And I like flowing, romantic, old school names for my girls. At least 2 syllables if not three.

And we are trying to steer clear of popular names… my sweet Sophie is one of about 371 in her school.

And it cannot start with an S or an L. Or a G. Just because.

And nothing too unusual. Although I do love unusual names, I fear that if our daughter has a physical special need, she’ll already feel conspicuous, and might not want more attention drawn to herself by a name like Olive. Although I do love the name Olive.

And it has to have a meaning with purpose. Our son Dalton, although named after his father, isn’t crazy about the fact that his name means, “from the valley” when his brother Asher has a name that means “blessed and happy”. So a good, strong meaning is preferable.

So, are there any names left?

Help greatly appreciated.

My top names for our daughter were Abigail and Allison. Though my husband axed those. I went to China with 2 names (we could agree on) Lucy and Naomi. She turned out to be a Naomi.

I can't wait to check back on Sunday or Monday to see if you get matched.

When picking a name for our daughter, it had to start with an "A" since both her siblings names started with an "A." We didn't want her to feel different. While we waited for her I continually prayed that her birthparents would have peace with the decision to relinquish their child, and they would have peace in knowing she would be loved and well taken care of. The pinyin for peace is "An". We also liked that the name Anna in Hebrew came from the New Testament as the Prophetess who recognized Jesus as the Messiah. So we Named our daughter "Ana."

This naming process is so good to be busy with, and we choose names for the same reason you just wrote down. We are from Holland so some names will be weird for you to pronounce…
One of our daughters is called "yanthe" (she is bio) and means something like the Lord is mercyfull… Our second daughter comes from China and her name is Maritt, which means Pearl. And our last girl (from china as well) is named Channa, and means the mercy of God. Probably we all will be surprised by the name you give the new comming star in you family!!!

    God bless, from Holland Carla

I'll start with my own name Emmy, it's short & sweet, it means "eager & hardworking". Although, if you spell it Emi, it means beauty. My Mom always called me Emiline (which I love).
I also like, Bethany, Eleanor, Eloise, Willah, Matilda, Claire….I love to pick out baby names, so the list could go on & on. Can't wait to see what you choose!!

Now I love and always have loved the name Olivia, however it has become a very, very popular name especially in the adoption community. I remember quite sometime ago you mentioning the name Olive. I FELL IN LOVE with that name. Seriously! I think it is a beautifully, sweet name, and not so common. The meaning of the name is Peace. I have an Anna, so I'm partial to that name – and it's not wildly popular, but for awhile I found myself saying, "Not Hannah, ANNA!" I also have a Rebecca – I, too, favor the traditional, more romantic, Biblical names. Zoe was always a favorite of mine – but it never would go with my last name. . . It means "life," – I also like Tessa – but it means "harvester" or "fourth child." Francesca's another "flowery, romantic" name – but, alas, it means, "from France!"

We have a friend whose daughter is named Annie Jacob–for her dad. Since your dh had so much to do with this adoption getting underway, might be sweet to tie in his name with something more feminine…masculine names and surnames are very popular for girls these days…if you have one that had significance to your family.

This is my love! I bought my first baby name book when I was 16 years old. I still have it and it is falling apart because it has been used so much! I love names and meanings of names and could never just pull a name out of thin air and use it for my child just because I liked it. I had to love it and it's meaning and it should have some significance to us!

Two names that come to mind that fit your criteria and IMO go with your family are: Annabelle (Anna, Annie, or Belle) -meaning grace and beauty and Abigail (Abby or Gail) meaning source of joy!

Wow…some beautiful choices. I have always loved the name Eden (once knew a woman named Eden Grace (Grace was her last name) and thought it was lovely. Emerson is really beautiful, too. Someone suggested Genevieve….very pretty and goes well with Vivienne. So many great suggestions.

But, as you know, we are pathetic when it comes to names…at least this time around. We were really thrown by the fact that our new daughter already had an English name which was the ONLY name she was ever called at her foster home, a name she identified with. Her name there was simply "Josie" but I find that I call her Josephine all the time…and that was not a name I ever consider (or liked) but it has grown on me. It's fun to see that other people like the name Josie as I know no one with that name.

Two French names I love are Juliet (French spelling is Juliette..I like one T better) and Elise and I think Josie would have been a Juliet (love the story, love the music, my favorite ballet, etc.). We may work it in somehow and do something like Juliet Josephine (or Lily Josephine, etc.), but still haven't decided on the official/formal name or maybe she will remain just the names she had in China already, Josie An Xiao Na. See, we are pathetic! But, if she never is a Juliet…my Juliet is still out there waiting for me. Think DH will go for that?

Hope you have an easier time!

It's so weird to see how many people like the name Olivia. I "picked" that name for my future daughter about 20 years ago. I fell in love with it when the little girl on Cosby Show had the name. Now, everyone has it. Hmmm….I think we still may use it.
We haven't even talked about names….I always say it feels like picking a name before your even pregnant. We're hoping that Sunday night we can start talkin'.

We named our daughter Katherine Cecile (the middle name is my mom's name, who is French)…I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE classic names…she goes by the above name or Kate, Katie, or Kat…depends upon her mood (& probably her age!)…As a 3rd grade teacher, I have seen them all in regards to names…I will tell you that the classics are the best…weird spellings and pronunciations totally confuse people and frustrate the child…Go classic…and with your HEART!!

I like names that have a nick name for when they are younger then a sophisticated name they can use when they go off to college!

Rebekah (nickname Becky or Bekah) means "joined," which I have always loved, especially for an adoptive family.

Emma means "embracing everything." I've always loved that meaning. The two Emmas I know absolutely DO embrace everything life throws at them.

Abigail means "my father is joyful," but I've always loved that particular name because – in the OT – King David said about Abigail "may you be blessed for your good judgment."

Adeline means "noble" … I have always loved the nickname Addie.

And of course Hepzibah, for obvious reasons.

I grew up with a one syllable name with a soft vowel. Then I married a man with a one syllable name with a soft vowel. So my mother gave us all two syllable names or we got a nickname that made it that. Our children all have two syllable names as well. And the meanings were super important. Our second daughter was Lauren, but that was before Lauren became a popular name, so I know what you mean. My name is Ruby, and I love it, but I resent that it is now popular (sorry, but I liked being original!). Since you said that you like somewhat old fashioned names, here is one to consider

I'm all about naming for meaning and using "different" but not made up names. My oldest daughter, Liberty Grace, LOVES the fact that she went all through school and never had another Liberty in school with her. I have a girl's name picked out this time around based on meaning and simplicity and love the fact that I've only met one girl with the name (where I got the idea!). Vivi really wants to use the name Adelaide, as that is one of my good friend's name and a very pretty name.

Okay I'm not sure if this name has already been given and reading through 135 posts ro see if it has is too daunting. ๐Ÿ™‚

So if this has been suggested already I'm sorry for the duplication.

    But how about Estelle?

LOVE this name, but can't use it with our last name as it would rhyme. Wouldn't do that to the poor girl. ๐Ÿ™‚

    Blessings –

Annalise (Anna), Abigail (Abbie), Emery, Adelaide (Addie), Ayla……. these are a few of my favorite girls' names… and yes, I like vowels at the beginning of my girls' names. ๐Ÿ™‚

Can't wait to see what you choose.

    Margot
    Tatiana
    Tiana
    Veronique

I like Emmeline but every third child is Emmy, Emma or Emily these days. Back to the 4 Sophies in the class problem. So, if you can avoid the nick name thing it works. I di dnot necessarily go with my favorites but ones that were multi syllable, seem to me to fit with Vivi's name, feminine. Sometimes names derived from other languages, like Vivienne can work well in English. Not common but not strange sounding either.

Francesca–one meaning is "free" which I think is appropriate since adoption is freeing her from the life she is currently destined for as a child with special needs in a Chinese orphanage. Excited for you!

I have seen a lot of Charlotte's mentioned, and I love that name! Charley would be so cute. Eden is also just beautiful. All of your kids names are GREAT, so I trust you guys will have an awesome name announcement for us one day soon! ๐Ÿ™‚ I should bookmark this post, so that I can refer to it later! ๐Ÿ™‚ My baby GIRL'S name is Austin Rivers, so apparently I do things backwards. (Everyone informs me that those are both boy names, but the hubs and I both love it, and it fits her.)

I just love names! And while it's fun, it's also serious business too (just like you said). I've never cared for "made up" names, but also prefer more traditional names…especially those with a special meaning. For that reason, all of my children have a first or middle name of a special family member.

I love my great-grandmother's name Mimi. The Hebrew meaning of Mimi is "wished for child" and the Latin meaning is "star of the sea". It can also mean "sweet". I've heard of those who shorten Naomi to Mimi. I love that too.

I do also love my grandmother's name Lucille which means "light". And of course, who can resist "Lulu"?

And while I have no connection to the name "Josie", I just think it is so sweet. It means "God multiplies" or "He will enlarge".

Funny about Sophie being such a popular name where you live. In the two years since our Sophie has been home, I have never heard of another child with that name in any of the schools my kids attend. I know it's popular among the adoption community, but I still love it more all the time ๐Ÿ™‚

    Okay, I'll bite.
This is a GIFT, my darling becuase I am a blog-stalker of yours and couldn't be more into your story and love that I can follow your blog. We are hoping to start the adoption process SOON (every day is a LONG one waiting to wait.)We have three sons: we are praying God will lead us mercifully to our daughters.
Her name will be **AMARIS** but we will call her "RISSA". It means "PROMISED OF GOD" in Hebrew.
Probrably "Rissa Rose" (my fave),"Rissa Claire" or "Rissa Beth" or something else simple as a middle name.
    So Merry Christmas, sister. ๐Ÿ˜‰
