We need a name for our next bundle of joy.
Choosing a name is something we take very, very seriously. After all, it’s what said child will be called for the rest of her life.
We’ve been at it for months and have a few we like, but nothing we love.
I love Vivienne’s name. Amazingly, I stumbled upon it and fell in love with it before I realized someone insanely famous had just used that name for her daughter. But I loved it enough to overlook that, and I’m so glad I did. I fall in love with Vivienne’s name more and more all the time. Alas, I fall in love with her more and more all the time.
Moving on…
Our last name isn’t long, but it’s hard to pronounce. So we need to stick with a relatively easy to pronounce first name.
And I like flowing, romantic, old school names for my girls. At least 2 syllables if not three.
And we are trying to steer clear of popular names… my sweet Sophie is one of about 371 in her school.
And it cannot start with an S or an L. Or a G. Just because.
And nothing too unusual. Although I do love unusual names, I fear that if our daughter has a physical special need, she’ll already feel conspicuous, and might not want more attention drawn to herself by a name like Olive. Although I do love the name Olive.
And it has to have a meaning with purpose. Our son Dalton, although named after his father, isn’t crazy about the fact that his name means, “from the valley” when his brother Asher has a name that means “blessed and happy”. So a good, strong meaning is preferable.
So, are there any names left?
Help greatly appreciated.

What about Jocelyn? You can shorten it to Joss? We always like that one. We also liked Ivy, but I think that's too short for your tastes. ๐
Team Gilbert says
I love Olivia. That sounds like it would flow well with your Fam. I also like Anna, Joy, and my fav of favs is Talulah. Whatever you name her is going to be awesome! Very excited for you guys!
Valerie and Jeff says
I love the name Georgia (but you said no "G's"–and I also love the name Ashlyn … that would not be confusing at all with Asher would it? heehee.
I love the name Saige (but you said no "S's"– I'm of little help so far.
So, what about:
Natalie: Birthday=Refers to the birthday of Christ
Beach Mama says
When picking a name for our daughter, it had to start with an "A" since both her siblings names started with an "A." We didn't want her to feel different. While we waited for her I continually prayed that her birthparents would have peace with the decision to relinquish their child, and they would have peace in knowing she would be loved and well taken care of. The pinyin for peace is "An". We also liked that the name Anna in Hebrew came from the New Testament as the Prophetess who recognized Jesus as the Messiah. So we Named our daughter "Ana."
Pam says
How about Caroline or Josephine?
Familie Moerkerken says
This naming process is so good to be busy with, and we choose names for the same reason you just wrote down. We are from Holland so some names will be weird for you to pronounce…
One of our daughters is called "yanthe" (she is bio) and means something like the Lord is mercyfull… Our second daughter comes from China and her name is Maritt, which means Pearl. And our last girl (from china as well) is named Channa, and means the mercy of God. Probably we all will be surprised by the name you give the new comming star in you family!!!
God bless, from Holland Carla
Pam says
forgot to add that Caroline is a southern name meaning beautiful woman and Josephine is french meaning God will add or God will increase.
Sally-Girl! says
How about Sally!!!!
Emmy says
Even though I think you're missing out on great names like Gabriel, Lillie & Shylah (my kids names)(HA!), I will still let you in on the girl names that I like.
I'll start with my own name Emmy, it's short & sweet, it means "eager & hardworking". Although, if you spell it Emi, it means beauty. My Mom always called me Emiline (which I love).
I also like, Bethany, Eleanor, Eloise, Willah, Matilda, Claire….I love to pick out baby names, so the list could go on & on. Can't wait to see what you choose!!
Emy says
I just have to add that I love EVA! We had picked out Annalise(annie) or Ella(ellie) for our sweet baby girl which I still love both, but my 8 year old son came up with Eva and we love it. Plus it's not that popular. I am partial to E names anyway! ;o) My name was always so different growing up, and now there are little Emy's and Emma everywhere!
P.S. Hi Emmy above!
Stacy says
I love the name Eden. It was the Place of Perfection!
Jen says
Just had to add two names I heard recently in my daughters Gymnastics class that I really love
1: Penny ( I guess it's short for Penelope)

Sherri says
I love the name Victoria. But is that Tori's full name? Charlotte. Abigail. Elise.
You don't have a Hannah. That is a lovely name, although there are several of those now. My Mia's middle name is Eliana. Someone mentioned that name above. It was special to me because of that meaning–the Lord has answered.
Desiree' says

Emmy says
Haha Emy! I'm glad I didn't say something about Emmy being such a unique name, since there were two Emmy/Emy's posted right after each other. I guess there goes our chances of getting a NiHaoY'all Emi/Emmy/Emy! ๐ I am partial to E names too! Nice to "meet" you!!

I dont usually comment much but decided to add a few cents to the name game. Now I love and always have loved the name Olivia, however it has become a very, very popular name especially in the adoption community. I remember quite sometime ago you mentioning the name Olive. I FELL IN LOVE with that name. Seriously! I think it is a beautifully, sweet name, and not so common. The meaning of the name is Peace. Call me crazy but I have always liked the very old fashioned name of Mabel too which means My Beautiful One. : )

Hi,
I think that Isabelle, Sophie, Vivienne and Josephine is a beutiful fit. Josephine is a french name and means He will enlarge.
And the short version: Josie is so cute.
Greetings from Holland,
Lotte (short version of Charlotte= also a beautiful name ;))
Jennifer says
Okay –
I have an Anna, so I'm partial to that name – and it's not wildly popular, but for awhile I found myself saying, "Not Hannah, ANNA!" I also have a Rebecca – I, too, favor the traditional, more romantic, Biblical names. Zoe was always a favorite of mine – but it never would go with my last name. . . It means "life," – I also like Tessa – but it means "harvester" or "fourth child." Francesca's another "flowery, romantic" name – but, alas, it means, "from France!"
Mom to my China Posse says
Alivia (different spelling for Oliva but emphasing the A)I will tell you having 6 daughters in my lifetime, I love my oldest daughters names Kaitlyn because I love all forms of it. I think Kate is great for child to grow into, I love Katie for a small girl and my daughter always went by Kaitlyn. I also love Abagail for the same reason because I love Abby as a nick name. I also love Alia, Adyn and Addy.
Tiffany says
Camille, Elspeth (German variance on Elizabeth), Elizabeth (& call her eliza), Francesca, Meredith, Miranda, Collins,
We have a friend whose daughter is named Annie Jacob–for her dad. Since your dh had so much to do with this adoption getting underway, might be sweet to tie in his name with something more feminine…masculine names and surnames are very popular for girls these days…if you have one that had significance to your family.
Lucky Mama says
I like the suggestion of Faith. I also love the name Charlotte. I have two daughters, Olivia and Luciana (Lucy). I can tell you Olivia is WAY too overused right now.
Best of luck, pray about it….God will reveal her name. ๐
clearness says
I totally have a name that I'm completely in love with but I'm all babied out. No more babies for me and I feel it in my heart that SOMEONE needs to be named this. There is a story so if you think the name is interesting come over to my blog and ask about why I like the name Tabitha Ruth so much.
Chelsea Gour says
This is my love! I bought my first baby name book when I was 16 years old. I still have it and it is falling apart because it has been used so much! I love names and meanings of names and could never just pull a name out of thin air and use it for my child just because I liked it. I had to love it and it's meaning and it should have some significance to us!
Two names that come to mind that fit your criteria and IMO go with your family are: Annabelle (Anna, Annie, or Belle) -meaning grace and beauty and Abigail (Abby or Gail) meaning source of joy!

It means Noble Strength. Something a girl might need. It is my mother's name, but I didn't realize her name has almost the same meaning as mine – Valerie, which means Strong.
Annie says
How about Virginia! You could call her Ginger!! Too cute! I also love Josephine (Josie). We have considered that name a couple of times!
Dana says
Don't comment much, but am always reading (: Love the name Eliana also because of it's meaning. We couldn't use it because it didn't work with our last name so we changed it to Aliana – our daughter who came home from China this past January. I like the names Hadley, Sadie, Addison, Kinley, Ayden, and Aubrey. One of favorites is Mercy, but that is a hard name to put with a middle and last name. I can't wait to hear about your newest addition!
kelsey says
my sister's name is aurora. you can go by rory for short if you like. it means 'light' (think aurora borealis) which matched her chinese name's meaning.
also i love love love juliet ๐
Cindy says
Our daughters are Tiana, Averi, Chloe and Channing. Channing means Church Scholar and we could call her Anni for short. Tia for Tiana.
Other names we loved were:
Amelia
Cambelle
Tessa
Hadleigh
Leighton
Sinclair
Sloane
Gracyn
I think that the suggestion Josie is cute for Josephine, and Lydia is a pretty name too, but you don't want any L's? I guess working w/ last names comes into play. This is fun, can't wait to see what you chose! I am sure it will be beautiful and fit right in w/ your other children's names!
Amy Murphy says
What about something like Emily or Julia?
Staci says
The two names I love, but husband won't let me use are Helen or Helena. Both mean "Light".
Valerie and Jeff says
I know you said no "L" names … but I love this one and I don't think it's overly common when used in full.
It was my Aunt's name and she was Such a strong woman!
Lillian
Wouldn't Vivienne and Lillian go so well together?!
(I promise to quite suggesting names now from the forbidden letters!)
Lindsay says
There are some great suggestions here. I've known a couple of Josie's (I know one is short for Josephine) and I love it. We've picked Rowan for our China girl. By the way, we think we'll be DTC in just a couple of weeks! Yee-haw!
my5kids says
I don't know either meaning but Nola is really sweet and I LOVE Adeline (Addie for short)!!!
Amanda says
Elise – My God is a vow
I like it but can't use it this time around, its all yours.
Amy Lynn says
Our favorite name for a girl is Cadence, which means rhythm. We are actually expecting our second child in February, and if we have a girl we will be using that name. But I am more than happy to share it with you since you dont live in south GA. Haha!
My other favorite is Jade Elizabeth. Elizabeth is obviously very common, but back 5 years ago when I decided I liked that name Jade wasn't very common. So it balanced out. But who knows, Jade may be on the common list now!
I have only commented on your blog a couple times, and you dont know me at all, but I am definitely a stalker. We are hoping to adopt in the future so I love reading your stories!
Alexa says
I love the name Aniah for a girl. it means my God has responded.
Joanne says
I'm a new "lurker" and enjoy your blog SO much ๐ I love the name MOLLY…how cute would that be??!
Wendy says
Wow…some beautiful choices. I have always loved the name Eden (once knew a woman named Eden Grace (Grace was her last name) and thought it was lovely. Emerson is really beautiful, too. Someone suggested Genevieve….very pretty and goes well with Vivienne. So many great suggestions.
But, as you know, we are pathetic when it comes to names…at least this time around. We were really thrown by the fact that our new daughter already had an English name which was the ONLY name she was ever called at her foster home, a name she identified with. Her name there was simply "Josie" but I find that I call her Josephine all the time…and that was not a name I ever consider (or liked) but it has grown on me. It's fun to see that other people like the name Josie as I know no one with that name.
Two French names I love are Juliet (French spelling is Juliette..I like one T better) and Elise and I think Josie would have been a Juliet (love the story, love the music, my favorite ballet, etc.). We may work it in somehow and do something like Juliet Josephine (or Lily Josephine, etc.), but still haven't decided on the official/formal name or maybe she will remain just the names she had in China already, Josie An Xiao Na. See, we are pathetic! But, if she never is a Juliet…my Juliet is still out there waiting for me. Think DH will go for that?
Hope you have an easier time!
Jenny says
It's so weird to see how many people like the name Olivia. I "picked" that name for my future daughter about 20 years ago. I fell in love with it when the little girl on Cosby Show had the name. Now, everyone has it. Hmmm….I think we still may use it.
We haven't even talked about names….I always say it feels like picking a name before your even pregnant. We're hoping that Sunday night we can start talkin'.
Oh, and I also love the name Clare.
Cara says
We're naming our daughter (also hoping to be matched tomorrow) "Amelia". Love, love, love that name!
Football and Fried Rice says
I see a lot of votes for Charlotte (which I adore) and I think I'd be tempted to call her Charlie ๐
I do think Violet would roll well with your girls: Victoria, Sophie, Isabelle, Vivienne and Violet.
Pretty cute!!
What's with all the Julia/Juliet/and Josephines?? I had no idea! Apparently, v-e-r-y popular!
Mrs. S. says
We named our daughter Katherine Cecile (the middle name is my mom's name, who is French)…I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE classic names…she goes by the above name or Kate, Katie, or Kat…depends upon her mood (& probably her age!)…As a 3rd grade teacher, I have seen them all in regards to names…I will tell you that the classics are the best…weird spellings and pronunciations totally confuse people and frustrate the child…Go classic…and with your HEART!!
withgratefulhearts says
My favorite name is Felicity it means happy and I think it's beautiful.
Elizabeth says
Like others, I like the name Olivia, but everyone is naming their kids that these days. What about Esther or Adele (pronounces a-duh-lay, not a-del I don't know how to type the accent). I also love Elizabeth, but of course that is biased. ๐

I like names that have a nick name for when they are younger then a sophisticated name they can use when they go off to college!
Margaret? She could be a Maggie?
I tend to like more traditional/ biblical names….I have a Hannah, Ben and a Sophia.

First of all, MY name is Lacie…thankyouverymuch. It's a fine and easy to pronounce and not common name for your new sweetie. (hee, hee. This is dripping with self-motivation).
Secondly (I guess that really is a word, huh), my favorite girl names are G names! My twin baby girls (not that I am expecting just yet) are Giovanna and Gabrielle.
Just my 2 cents.
Love you Stefanie. So very happy for you!

Dang. I was hoping you were going to ask for some boy names, because that's what I need help with! For whatever reason, I have an easier time with girl names. Isabelle et Sijia says
Our daughter kept her Chinese name and it's Sijia. It means "expect for the best". An other name that I like but it's really French… Eulalie. She's a saint. In English, it's Eulalia. Like it either way ;o)
For a boy, I like Eliott.
Good luck with finding the right name ;o)

We were trying to use a name that ends in a, but my husband only liked Maggie, so Maggie will be the name for our fourth daughter. I also like Annabelle and Lizzie. But I have an Anna who we call Annie and a Sarah Elizabeth who we call Sarah Beth. Honestly, I love variations of the same names over and over because I also love Annalise and Eliza. We also have Emma Katherine who we call Emma Kate. I also like double names too! ๐

Rebekah (nickname Becky or Bekah) means "joined," which I have always loved, especially for an adoptive family.
Emma means "embracing everything." I've always loved that meaning. The two Emmas I know absolutely DO embrace everything life throws at them.
Abigail means "my father is joyful," but I've always loved that particular name because – in the OT – King David said about Abigail "may you be blessed for your good judgment."
Adeline means "noble" … I have always loved the nickname Addie.
And of course Hepzibah, for obvious reasons.

I love the names Olivia and Charlotte – but as a teacher I wouldn't use them as they're too popular and so have too many pupil associations!
My DD from China is Alice, the shortlist for her also included Beatrice, Clara, Matilda or Romilly. I'm waiting for a domestic adoption – Clara, Christy, Joanna are at the top of my list, for now! Genevieve, Josephine and Naomi are also favourites. My Alice wants her sister to be Eleanor, we'll see.
Thinking of you especially today,

Pierce Family Happenings says
Our oldest daughter is named Abigail Grace. Abigail means "her father's joy" and the Bible character "Abigail" has a great story. One of our favorites. ๐ She is in 2nd grade now and has no intentions of shortening it to Abby, just her preference.
Our second daughter has a combination family name from my side and husband's side of the family- AnnaClaire. Love, love, love Claire.
I am a school teacher, so I have to find names that I do not associate with students.
Praying for you all today!

I grew up with a one syllable name with a soft vowel. Then I married a man with a one syllable name with a soft vowel. So my mother gave us all two syllable names or we got a nickname that made it that. Our children all have two syllable names as well. And the meanings were super important. Our second daughter was Lauren, but that was before Lauren became a popular name, so I know what you mean. My name is Ruby, and I love it, but I resent that it is now popular (sorry, but I liked being original!). Since you said that you like somewhat old fashioned names, here is one to consider
Audrey
(one of my sisters has this name; it means noble strength.)
Daisy Dreams says
I'm all about naming for meaning and using "different" but not made up names. My oldest daughter, Liberty Grace, LOVES the fact that she went all through school and never had another Liberty in school with her. I have a girl's name picked out this time around based on meaning and simplicity and love the fact that I've only met one girl with the name (where I got the idea!). Vivi really wants to use the name Adelaide, as that is one of my good friend's name and a very pretty name.

WOW…Aren't you something to be SOOOOO popular-135 comments-WOW!! I can't get over the amount of comments you got on this post…i am FAR from popular and i would be lucky to have this many HITS in a few months let alone comments?????
Congrats on your next little one and all the ones you have plus your rockin' on board hubby! What a LUCKY lady you are! Hugs, Donna…oh and i am sure whatever name you come up with will be just wonderful ;0)

Okay I'm not sure if this name has already been given and reading through 135 posts ro see if it has is too daunting. ๐
So if this has been suggested already I'm sorry for the duplication.
But how about Estelle?
LOVE this name, but can't use it with our last name as it would rhyme. Wouldn't do that to the poor girl. ๐
Blessings –

I like Emmeline but every third child is Emmy, Emma or Emily these days. Back to the 4 Sophies in the class problem. So, if you can avoid the nick name thing it works. I di dnot necessarily go with my favorites but ones that were multi syllable, seem to me to fit with Vivi's name, feminine. Sometimes names derived from other languages, like Vivienne can work well in English. Not common but not strange sounding either.

Francesca–one meaning is "free" which I think is appropriate since adoption is freeing her from the life she is currently destined for as a child with special needs in a Chinese orphanage. Excited for you!

I have seen a lot of Charlotte's mentioned, and I love that name! Charley would be so cute. Eden is also just beautiful. All of your kids names are GREAT, so I trust you guys will have an awesome name announcement for us one day soon! ๐ I should bookmark this post, so that I can refer to it later! ๐ My baby GIRL'S name is Austin Rivers, so apparently I do things backwards. I just love names! And while it's fun, it's also serious business too (just like you said). I've never cared for "made up" names, but also prefer more traditional names…especially those with a special meaning. For that reason, all of my children have a first or middle name of a special family member.
I love my great-grandmother's name Mimi. The Hebrew meaning of Mimi is "wished for child" and the Latin meaning is "star of the sea". It can also mean "sweet". I've heard of those who shorten Naomi to Mimi. I love that too.
I do also love my grandmother's name Lucille which means "light". And of course, who can resist "Lulu"?
And while I have no connection to the name "Josie", I just think it is so sweet. It means "God multiplies" or "He will enlarge".
Funny about Sophie being such a popular name where you live. In the two years since our Sophie has been home, I have never heard of another child with that name in any of the schools my kids attend. I know it's popular among the adoption community, but I still love it more all the time ๐
Shelly says
Charlotte or Riley…. sorry, didn't read through the list everyone else wrote, but those are two of my fave's, for what it's worth! Can't wait to "see" who she is! Blessings to your beautiful family!

I'm a bit partial to Maggie…I love the idea of having it short for Magnolia…I also love the name Elodie.

This is a GIFT, my darling becuase I am a blog-stalker of yours and couldn't be more into your story and love that I can follow your blog. We are hoping to start the adoption process SOON (every day is a LONG one waiting to wait.)We have three sons: we are praying God will lead us mercifully to our daughters.
Her name will be **AMARIS** but we will call her "RISSA". It means "PROMISED OF GOD" in Hebrew.
Probrably "Rissa Rose" (my fave),"Rissa Claire" or "Rissa Beth" or something else simple as a middle name.
So Merry Christmas, sister. ๐
