In case you’re ever in this situation, I just thought I’d share what not to do.
If your iPhone is acting up and you call the Apple guy to help you out, don’t trust him.
When he tells you to reset your iPhone to factory settings, don’t do it.
When he tells you that, once you back up your iPhone, you can re-install it all from your backup data, he’s lying.
Your calendar that you’ve worked so hard to build? All those orthodontic, pediatrician, OT, PT, Orkin man, mammogram, endocrinologist, geneticist, tooth cleaning and parent-teacher visits you’ve been trying to organize so faithfully?
Will be completely lost.
And that contact list you’ve laboriously updated with various and sundry phone numbers that you might (or might not) ever need?
Will disappear from cyberspace. Without a trace.
You know, just in case that every happens to someone. Unless you want to spend an entire day, trying to recreate your beloved, hard-earned calendar and contact list.
Not that any of y’all would ever be so naive.
Ahem.
Kelly says
Oh no, I can really relate. I had this same thing happen to me a couple of weeks ago-it was SOOOOOO frustrating!!! I still can't figure out how to get all my lost Aps back. Hope you can retrive some things, I just kept re-syncing and got most of my contacts and some of my photos back. Best of luck!!
Lori says
Ouch.
Well, I guess that's why I rely on the tried and true paper calendar.
Although it does one no good if one doesn't look at it.
And misses and ortho appointment. This morning.
Ouch.

That's why ya gotta do the blackberry thing.
Just had mine dunked in water by the precious son. It did work after a dy in rice. But I also learned they have a backup assitant that automatically backs up all my info online. So I made sure to install it.
The Stiffs says
Sorry. We set up a mobile me account. It links my husband's phone, my phone and our mac. Knock on wood, if I mess one up, there is always a back up. Plus, we have various calendars, his for work, a family, etc.
Stefanie says
Y'all are just way smarter than me. Why didn't I know all this stuff?!?
DiJo says
Oh dang Stef!! I am going to go "sync" now!!!! Losing your planner is such a hassle and a lot of time to re-create!!!!! UGH!
Big Hugs from MN!

Patricia/NYC says
Noooooo!!!! I am SOOO sorry this happened…that really, really stinks…
OK, now I'm off to back up everything!!!
a Tonggu Momma says
Ugh. Well, I kinda know how this feels. Except for the Apple guy part. I'm sorry.
Aus says
Stef – I'm a digital forensic guy – and now you know why I keep all of that in a little book in my back pocket! Never needs batteries – if it goes for a swim it only needs a few seconds in a microwave (and I MEAN seconds!!) and it's back to new – and – you can file it at the end of the year with all your 'other' tax stuff just in case the IRS comes knocking! (and I'll leave out the part about PC's vs. Macs….;)
Still – I DO feel your pain!
hugs – aus and co.
Stefanie says
Oh Aus… you are one awesome guy.
And big hearted too…
you left out the PC vs. Mac stuff 😉
The Freemans says
So you were or were not syncing your iPhone with your computer? I keep telling my wife she is supposed to sync hers with iTunes from time to time for this exact reason. She somehow believes everything is just magically supposed to be there floating around space, never mind she NEVER syncs it to the computer as instructed.
Ann Marie says
Oh nooooooooooooooooo!
Stefanie says
I wasn't syncing it regularly. I plugged it in and updated it (it was a big update since it had been a while) and then 'restored to factory settings' based on what the apple guy told me to do. The calendar is a brand new set up as well as the contacts, so I think it couldn't sync because the format was so different? I don't know, I'm a computer idiot… that's why I buy Macs!
I think that if I had synced it AFTER the update and BEFORE resetting it, I would have been fine. But I didn't 🙁
So I am thinkin' it was user error, not iPhone error.
Cindy M says
This is second only to losing photos that you haven't backed up. Or slightly worse than losing your recently updated Christmas card address list when your computer crashes. And you haven't backed it up. Ugh.
I would not want to lose my phone contacts, for sure. Hope the pieces of the puzzle go back together quickly.
Sarah says
So what you're saying is I should get a Blackberry, not an iPhone?
Lost and Found says
I got sucked into Mobile ME for this reason. I already lost all my BB contacts and wasn't having any of that nonsense again.
