My hope for you, this Thanksgiving, is this.
I hope your Thanksgiving is dirty.
I hope you remember to laugh and enjoy the people that surround you. That love you.
And that you love them right back.
I hope you remember to laugh, most of all, at yourself.
And not expect perfection. Or even desire perfection.
But to relish real life.
I hope you remember to be grateful for the little things as well as the big things.
The things we take for granted.
The things that would certainly be missed if one day they were lost.
I hope you pull your shirt sleeves up and dig into life.
And that you can reflect this Thanksgiving and say that yours is a life well-lived.
Well-loved.
Well-spent.
I hope you can look back at worry, sorrow and disappointment, and see how those things have shaped you. Prepared you to be more grateful when life is good once again.
And I hope you don’t miss a chance to jump right into life, even if it’s unplanned. Unexpected.
Even if it’s messy.
From our house to yours, have a dirty Thanksgiving.
We will be doing our best to have one.

Ha! I don't think anyone has ever wished me a happy dirty Thanksgiving, and man you are spot on. I swear, the moments when I stifle that inner control freak and just enjoy the kids messing around and getting filthy are the best.
Here's to more messiness in the coming year.
You have an awesome Thanksgiving too, enjoy the family.

Stephanie…I could hug you for this post. My brother, wife and three kids arrived last night after a 14 hour drive to spend Thanksgiving with us. Their 2 year old vomited in the car about a mile from our house and has a fever. I am a bit of a germ phobe, and I know that God is really stretching me to be gracious, and still have fun together (even if I have visions of my 10 kids all barfing to look forward to). THANK YOU!! 🙂

Wow, Stefanie, that was a wonderful post, and just what I needed this morning. I don't comment very often *hangmyheadinshame*, but follow regularly. Your statement about expecting/desiring perfection is so well put and really hits home, as I still try to expect and desire that exact thing.
Seriously, I just had my sermon for the day!
Looks like you had a wonderful Thanksgiving!
