Y’all.
She’s reading.
For our very special girl, this is huge.
And now is filled with such a sense of accomplishment.
Reading is still a struggle for her.
And she remains well behind her peers.
But she’s reading. And she’s happy about it.
Seriously, I could just pop.
Today, when she got home from school, she ran in – book in hand – ready to read to me.
When she finished, I was so tickled at how well she was reading, I asked her if I could take a picture of her. And her book.
And she lit up.
Then, I asked her if she wanted me to take a video of her reading her book.
And, well…
I’ll let you see for yourself.
P.S. If you’re reading this on Google Reader, you’ll have to click over to see ๐

I know how huge this is! I am in the middle of taking my second son around to various and sundry specialists to see why at age 8, he’s still only reading at a kindergarten level, struggles so much, and the best strategy for helping him learn. He’s such a sweet boy. Seriously sweet! Yet he struggles with feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem. Like you, I think God knew that I would have to dig extra deep for this child of mine and I will tell you that He knit our hearts together the minute we locked eyes. I’ve cried many a tear for him out of sheer frustration of not being able to smooth out the bumps in his road. But I know that my child is more than a diagnosis, he’s more than a bunch of letters in the names of syndromes, he’s a child of God and loved not just by us but very dearly from above.
Great persistence Isabelle! Keep Phil. 4:13 in your heart sweet girl!

Way to go Isabelle!! You did such a great job, even reading while looking down from the top of the book! I have a hard time doing that when I’m reading to a class, but that was superb:)
Lorraine says
Please tell your sweet girl that the author of that book (Joy Cowley) did not learn to read until she was older than the rest of the kids in her class… It was “The Story of Ping”(set in China) that made her a reader because the book was SO good she could not put it down! I had the privilege of hearing Joy speak years ago, when she told us her wonderful story of learning to read.
Jolene (Homespun Heritage) says
Aww! congrats sweetie! Good job on the hard work!
My 7 yr old learned to read about 6 months ago and I am so glad I help him off for so long and never pressured him…He learned when he was ready and the joy that brings us both is immeasurable!

Trish Byce says
Fondly, I recall Mac Byce’s pictures with Isabelle in China. What wonders those first days have led your family to. Knowing (or not knowing) the challenges these girls might face was no impediment to the love felt from them and for them. Not with us now, sure Mac watches all these children grow up from above. Ming is entering 9th grade this year. She, too, has continued to struggle with language processing, reading and written communications. Better & better you will get ! Much love, bycegirls (twitter).
