Zach.
My oldest son.
I still remember the joy of holding him in my arms for the first time. He was (and is) so darn adorable. Even the labor nurses exclaimed how incredibly cute he was with his little shock of cotton-white hair and piercing grey-blue eyes.
He turned 15 this week. So, technically, he’s not my baby anymore.
But I will always have a super soft spot for this guy. He just has a way about him. A way that I find hard to resist, even after 15 years of being his mama.
He loves to laugh and to make others laugh. When he was 4, he’d make up jokes. If we made the mistake of laughing, he’d retell his *joke* (and I use that term liberally) over and over. And over.
But, whether his joke was funny or not, he’d always make me smile.
Since he could speak, he’s spoken his mind. And he loves to ask questions. This has resulted in many moments of spontaneous hilarity. So many, in fact, that I began to write them down when Zach was about 4 and whenever I need a smile, I can bring out that notebook. It never fails.
Here’s a favorite observation from when he was 5:
Upon waking up one morning ~
“Mom, where do eye boogers come from?”
“I don’t know Zach, where do you think?”
“Maybe at night they fall out of your nose and get in your eyes and dry up!”
After reading about a Hotwheel Cars offer on the Oatmeal Creme Pie box, Zach asked if he could have them. I said he could if he had $7.50 to pay for them. Zach replied, “Could you give me the $7.00 and I’ll try to find the $.50?”
And he still manages to make me laugh ’til my sides hurt.
Zach loves to create things, to build things. He still occasionally enjoys the 237 pound tub of Legos he has collected over his lifetime. All without instructions. He doesn’t care, though. He likes to create his own masterpieces.
Zach has an incredibly tender heart. But don’t take this to mean he’s above driving his siblings crazy. He manages to fluster and frustrate even the tiniest of brothers and sisters by finding just the wrong thing to say.
And when they’re thoroughly aggravated and ready to pop, he’ll throw his arms around them and say just the right thing.
And that’s Zach.
I’m still crazy about him. And somehow expect I will be 15 years from now.

Oh, sweetie – in my selfishness, I wondered if you would do a SS post this week! Now, I know that it was more than likely scheduled to post – BUT STILL!!!! I loved this SS on Zach – your "biggest" of the big boys! What a handsome young man – I am sure he loves the stories you told!?!?!
I am counting down and breathing prayers every time I pause for the moments that lie ahead for you. We are talking hours – I wonder if I will get any sleep tonight π
It so nice to hear more about Zach! He's so handsome and has such a sweet, modest…sort of understated smile. Your photos of him seem so quietly expressive…I love them. I don't know if my bigger guys would ever agree to a "Sunday Snapshot" but I'm glad yours did. Your kids are so different from one another…and all so beautiful! Your love for them always shines through and is very moving.
He's so handsome!! And YOU are so amazing! I can't believe you still posted your weekly photo from China! YOU Go GIRL!!! π
