anatomy of a sick day

DSC_0554

Asher has been sick off and on since Saturday.Today was a sick day.Too bad for Asher that sick days around here are not pretty.Notice the austere surroundings.Down comforter. Deck of cards. DVD case stuffed with movies ad nauseum. And Toaster Streudel. In addition to being one tough mama, I'm a health nut. And I don't care who knows it.I'm also quite strict. Only highly educational shows allowed around here. And I don't care who knows that, either.I also insist that my children wear clothes, even when they might not feel like it due to a high fever.Because if I indulge … [Read more...]

Sunday snapshot: Asher

Asher means "happy" in Hebrew. If ever a child truly embodied his name, it would be my boy.He is happy. And he makes me happy. He loves sweets. It couldn't possibly have anything to do with the fact that I craved cherry pie filling during my entire pregnancy.I must have eaten a lot of said cherry pie filling because Asher weighed almost a pound and a half more than any of my other kiddos. And he's still big. At 10 years old, he wears a size 9 men's shoe. And size 12 jeans. His hands are almost as big as mine. And he eats more than Chris and I put together. He loves school … [Read more...]

Last night during, you guessed it, football practice, I took a few pictures of the kiddos. Nothing too exciting... I just like to pull the ol' Nikon out every now and then to capture a little of the same old same old. Here's my dude. Just hanging out. Asher is always a willing participant when momma wants to snap a few pictures. He really doesn't like having his picture taken, but he loves his momma more than he dislikes the camera. And he's just got that smile. I can't resist him.He endures. Photogenically.Just a little while later, as he was standing in front of me, I … [Read more...]

Ahhhh. This is what our boys' room / kids' playroom looks like now.To fully appreciate it... it's beauty, it's simplicity, let's take a trip down memory lane...Here's what it looked like about 3 months ago. Before we moved in. Amazingly, we bought this house from an older couple. A couple. As in two people. And this was a bonus room. Evidently, they had more stuff stored in their house than Solomon did in his temple. And here is where we came in.With all of our stuff. But we've got the excuse of having 8 (going on 9) kids. That's enough of an excuse, right? Here we'd … [Read more...]

... for a mommy meltdown. My babies started school today.Suddenly vanished are the memories of endless lunch hours, the overflowing laundry basket, the fact that I can get no.thing. done.I just want my babies to stay home a little longer.Suddenly, they look so tiny. And big. Has it already been a year? But too little to be facing this new school all alone. Too little to be riding the bus. Too little to be away from me all day, five days a week. They're nervous. And tired. They're not used to waking up before 7:00. I'm not used to waking before 7:00.I can see the anxiety … [Read more...]

I love my kids. And I love to capture their individual 'beauty' whenever I get the chance.I like to get right up in their grill and either try to just leave well enough alone, wanting to capture the simplicity of the moment...or do something silly to get a reaction.I took all these close-ups at the beach, where it seemed that every other minute my kids were doing something I wanted to capture.Like trying to escape the madness of the fam get some fresh air on the back porch...or laying on the couch.I so love my kids. … [Read more...]

Somebody turned 10 years old yesterday.I'm not sad about it at all. Not. One. Bit.I mean, just because I can still remember the moment he entered this world like it was yesterday. Splotchy and pruned. And huge.Did I mention he was huge? A solid pound and a half bigger than all my other kiddos. And, in an ironic twist, the only one I delivered without even a hint of anesthesia. Not even a Tylenol.Nine pounds, two ounces. And a 14.5 inch head. But who's counting? I secretly think it was all the cherry pie filling I craved when I was carrying him.But that's all ancient … [Read more...]

Bubbles make it all better

We spent the majority of our long weekend at home, working on the upstairs bathroom. Well, actually it was me on 'kid duty' and Chris upstairs, working away. I must admit, I was a bit jealous as the days wore on and the kids got punchy. The reason my better half has to do the work himself is that we had a bad experience with the carpenter that we hired to do the job. We realized he was overcharging us...big time....so we had to 'let him go'. So with no other carpenters available that meant that Chris ended up being the go-to-guy. Fortunately the … [Read more...]
