poet2013

I did it last year. The year before. And even the year before that. It's sort of a thing, I suppose. And, since 2013 doesn't want to be left out, here are my favorites from the last year. Not necessarily technically my favorites, from a photography standpoint. Just from a mama's standpoint. 1. Princess Vivienne. 2. My incredibly silly pony. 3. My brave and beautiful Velvet, just days before she passed away. 4. Isabelle... being Isabelle. 5. Tallula, home one wonderful year. 6. My babies. Every one of 'em. 7. My biggest boy, the … [Read more...]

hello, handsome

poet9.2013.1

We've been having some extraordinarily beautiful days around here. It's been so beautiful, I've been finding all sorts of reasons to spend as much time possible outside. Like Poet. He's just 3 years old and still a baby in so many ways. But he's looking so big lately. So mature. We got him as a long yearling and he's grown about 3" since then. And put on a few hundred pounds. I haven't managed to capture any of his funny faces recently, but he still makes them. Regularly. And still manages to be a wee bit spoiled. What can I say, I'm just a … [Read more...]

can’t. resist.

poetsmile

Okay, I admit it. I might have a leee-tle bit of an addiction. But I just can't help myself. When the sun is getting low, and Poet is hanging around the fence... I am simply unable to resist. Must grab my camera. Must see what he'll do when I point it in his direction. Every now and then, he'll even give me one of these. Keeps me coming back for more. Man, I love this darn pony. And yes - I am happy to say he'll be making the move with us. My addiction continues. Linking up with my friend Lisa from The Long Road to China. … [Read more...]

a new day

poetnose

I haven't been taking many pictures lately. And it doesn't help that even when I try to take pictures these days, I somehow can't even manage that. Oh well. But today is a new day. I'm feeling oh-so-grateful. Hopeful. Joyful. Because, well... God is good. On the verge of celebrating the birth of our Savior, there is so very much to be rejoicing over. So I'm going to share one of the few pictures I have taken. Of one of my very favorite subjects. Because kids are fickle. And temperamental. And prone to bad hair days. And this guy is always happy to see me. … [Read more...]

The girls and I were out the other day feeding carrots to Poet. As soon as the carrots were gone, they moved to gathering the few remaining dandelions and running back and forth, feeding them to him one at a time. Then they were gone. And the girls were done. But Poet wasn't. He stood and waited. And waited. And I ended up getting my favorite photo I have of him. Okay, maybe not my favorite. I mean, look at him here. Here. And here. But I still love this one. He looks so handsome, none of the silliness I usually get when I take pictures of him. I … [Read more...]

rock the shot

Recently, I began following several photography websites. Jasmine Star. Digital Camera World. Rock the Shot. What can I say. I've got photography on the brain. And this month, Rock the Shot is having a photo challenge for pets. And I just couldn't resist putting up this picture I recently took of Poet when I went out to work on a self portrait. Seriously, he is so much better in front of the camera than I am. I know, y'all are probably getting tired of my love affair with this crazy pony, but I just can't get enough of him. He makes me smile … [Read more...]

the last week

poetface

It's the last week of the 8-week photography class I'm taking with my friend and photography mentor, Lisa. It's been a fabulous ride. She's pushed us in so many ways. And the final push? Self-portraits. And yes - this is about how I feel about attempting one. Trying to honestly capture myself in a photograph is something I've never, ever done. Much less done well. So there is a whole lot to learn. I'll admit, I am intimidated. And a bit nauseous. Thankfully, I had some motivation to help me dip my toe into this assignment. Someone so fun, … [Read more...]

Because he makes me smile. Because he allows me to photograph him relentlessly. Because he doesn't talk back. And because his funny face made it into the top 10 on I Heart Faces Pet Face contest. So many cute pet faces featured... undoubtedly a few over there will make you smile. … [Read more...]

photography 101 :: light

light-1-7

I am really having fun with my new book. I do wish I were moving a bit faster, but considering all I have to learn and all the other balls I have to keep in the air, I'm happy to be making any progress. As I've mentioned on my previous Photography 101 posts, I'm reading a fantastic photography book. And the author encourages his readers to get out and complete what he calls 'creative exercises'. And this week's creative exercise is on light. A small word. A huge concept. The author compares light to paint - what we choose to do with it creates textures, … [Read more...]
