Sunday snapshot: Isabelle

This post isn't so much for you as it is for me.When I wrote 'thankful' the other day, it required that I look back at some of the old stuff.Stuff I'd already forgotten, it happened so long ago.Like two whole years ago.I have got to lay off the aspartame. So, without further ado, I'll be posting regular updates on my kids. Sunday Snapshot, I'll call it. Maybe with a snappy name like that, I'll remember. I'll feature one of my kiddos, ideally with a cute picture, and what's goin' on in their lives.I'd say it's for them, so they have this to look back on, but it's really … [Read more...]
thankful

Watching Jude run fills my heart with joy. Like just about any mama, watching her child. But it also fills me with indebtedness, gratitude and thankfulness.Jude couldn't even stand on his own when we met him in China as a 16 month old with uncorrected bilateral clubfoot. His ankles were bruised from his attempts to try and stand, and after just a few minutes of effort, he'd have to give up, exhausted. But that has all changed, thanks to one extremely special man.Dr. Ponseti, the man who developed the Ponseti Method of clubfoot casting, revolutionized the way clubfoot is … [Read more...]
sweetening the pot

In the summer of 2004, God opened my eyes to the orphan in China. This was a truly life changing moment for me as I had never even considered adoption before. Never. I, to be brutally honest, thought adoption was for people who were not able to have children biologically. But that all changed when my husband came to me and told me we had a daughter in China. My eyes were opened and I will, thankfully, never be the same.Since that day, four and a half years ago, God has been at work more than ever in our lives... most of all in bringing home four amazing children from … [Read more...]
update on the Shepster

Several of you guys have asked about Shepherd since my last post, so I thought I'd let all y'all (that just can not be correct) in on what's going on with the little dude.We got his blood tests back.I swear, it seemed like they tested him for everything on the planet: lead, CBC, iron, HepB, HepC, celiac, and all sorts of other stuff I can't remember. It all came back totally normal. Except he is the tiniest bit anemic. When I got the news, I realized that I'd kind of expected to hear more than that.So I am thoroughly relieved that, so far, our little guy is just fine.On … [Read more...]

special needs: mind your business
Ever really don't want to write? But feel like you need to? So it's exhausted, disjointed and painful, and feels like an insanely long dental cleaning? Well, this is one of those times. Don't necessarily want to say what I gotta say, but feel like it needs to be said. And anyone that knows me will tell you, if I think it needs to be said, I'monnasayit.Awhile back, my post about our sweet Vivi and the HepB translation error* furrowed some brows in the HepB community. There was talk about me and my family. Talk of how "disappointing" I was, as a special needs advocate, … [Read more...]
Shepherd

Our little guy.Our littl-est guy by a long shot: 24.5 pounds soaking wet. And he's probably going be smaller than Miss Vivi by the time she gets home. But we're okay with little. The problem is, he's not getting bigger. Even my small standards, he's little. And no matter what we do, he just doesn't seem to be catching up.Today we went for the second round of blood draws to see what might be going on with Shepherd. We'll be referred out soon to an endocrinologist who, hopefully, will find an answer for our little guy.Thing is, Shepherd can eat. Okay, not a ton, but … [Read more...]
calling all proud parents!
It's time for a change! Rebecca did an amazing job putting together the homepage for No Hands But Ours (although I am, admittedly, a bit biased when it comes to my boys!) But I think now is the perfect time to change things up!I'm ready to see some new faces! How would you like to have your child's photo gracing the homepage? If you are the proud parent to a SN child adopted from China, please submit any photo you'd like considered for the No Hands But Ours homepage to us at nohandsbutours@gmail.com.Depending on the response, I might be able to twist Rebecca's arm to … [Read more...]
My Chinese son

I have 5 sons and 3 daughters. When we started for Isabelle in 2004, we had 3 sons and 1 daughter. So it was a logical conclusion that we would be going to China for a girl. I guess I never put much thought into it, a daughter it was to be from the start. Sophie, who came home next, captured my heart when I saw her precious face on a special needs list, so we never even spent any time debating the "boy or girl" issue. But then came Jude. When we initially thought about going back for our third child from China, in my heart I was thinking it would be a girl. … [Read more...]
