Sunday Snapshot: 24

24 years ago, and some change, I gave birth to my first child.

It was late August. In Dallas, Texas. And I was hot.

Victoria24

I had taken the idea of “eating for two” literally. I’d gained *ahem* more than the recommended 35 pounds.

A lot more.

Victoria24-2

Due in part to my cravings, of all things, for Long John Silvers. With the vinegar and tartar sauce and everything.

What can I say. It was a dark time.

Victoria24-3

But my baby girl was soon to arrive.

And I was beyond ready to meet the little one who had taken occupancy of my belly.

Victoria24-4

Finally, three days after my due date, I woke up and felt a twinge.

Then another.

Victoria24-5

My mom flew in that morning and by afternoon, we were all at the hospital.

At last, I was liberated of my maternity girdle and black Converse high-tops.

I was ready to become a mama.

The rest of the story isn’t fit to print. Let’s just say, I did not inherit my mother’s tolerance for pain, nor did I replicate her ability to give birth 30 minutes after arriving at the hospital with nary a pain killer.

I should have paid more attention during those Lamaze classes.

Victoria24-7

Happy Birthday, Victoria – the one who made being a mama so easy. Even if you did leave me completely unprepared for parenting your brothers.

I so love you.

Awww… This is a sweet post and it cracked me up a little! The first time around I was “blessed” with the quick birth and lack of pain meds. The second round the lack of meds was only due to the fact that we arrived at the hospital too late. Had I gotten there earlier I seriously may have considered it.

This rings very familiar! My oldest just turned 24 on Sunday, was 5 days past the due date, & the fact that they made me step on the scales once off the elevator was cruel & unusual punishment…Yikes! Is it not craziness that here we are, 24 years later!? Still having a bit of trouble wrapping my mind around it. Happy birthday to your beautiful girl!

Happy birthday Victoria! My heart swells at these pictures to think Victoria was the baby that made your heart a mama and those gorgeous little girls, who may have spent their entire lives in an orphanage are instead surrounded by love in the arms of their sister.
